Portuguese nobility

Portuguese nobility refers to the hereditary aristocratic class in Portugal, which played a significant role in the country’s history and governance. Originating in the Middle Ages, noble titles were granted by the monarchy and included ranks such as dukes, counts, and barons. Nobles often held land, enjoyed privileges, and had responsibilities in local administration and military service. Over time, the influence of the nobility diminished, especially following the establishment of the Portuguese Republic in 1910, which abolished aristocratic titles. Today, noble titles exist primarily as historical references, with many descendants still reclaiming their heritage.
