The House of Aviz was a Portuguese royal dynasty that ruled Portugal from 1385 to 1580. It originated with King João I and is known for strengthening Portugal’s independence, exploring new territories, and establishing an important era of expansion during the Age of Discoveries, including voyages by Vasco da Gama. The line ended when Portugal was united with Spain under the Iberian Union.
