Operation Drumbeat
Operation Drumbeat was a World War II German naval campaign in 1942, focused on attacking and disrupting Allied shipping along the U.S. East Coast. Following the U.S. entry into the war, German U-boats targeted merchant vessels to weaken supply lines. The operation saw significant success initially, with U-boats sinking numerous ships off the coast. This led to heightened tensions, calls for increased naval protection, and changes in Allied shipping strategies. However, improved intelligence and anti-submarine measures eventually turned the tide against the U-boats, limiting their effectiveness later in the war.
