One China Principle
The One China Principle is a policy asserting that there is only one sovereign state under the name "China." It emphasizes that Taiwan is part of China, and the Chinese government does not recognize a separate Taiwanese state. This principle is fundamental to China's foreign relations; countries seeking to establish diplomatic ties with China must accept this view, often leading to the exclusion of Taiwan from international organizations. The principle reflects historical and political disputes following the Chinese Civil War, when the Nationalist government retreated to Taiwan while the Communist Party established control over mainland China.
