Taiwan Relations Act
The Taiwan Relations Act (1979) is a U.S. law that guides the relationship between the United States and Taiwan. It was enacted after the U.S. officially shifted diplomatic recognition from Taipei (Taiwan) to Beijing (China). The law states that while the U.S. does not officially recognize Taiwan as a sovereign nation, it remains committed to providing Taiwan with defensive support and maintaining a strong, unofficial relationship. This includes selling arms and ensuring stability in the region. Essentially, it balances official recognition with support for Taiwan’s security and economic well-being.
