Kuomintang (Nationalist Party)
The Kuomintang (KMT), or Nationalist Party, is a major political party in Taiwan originally founded in China in 1919. It played a central role in overthrowing the Qing Dynasty and establishing the Republic of China. Historically, the KMT promoted Chinese nationalism, modernization, and centralized authority. After losing the Chinese Civil War to the Communist Party in 1949, the KMT retreated to Taiwan, where it governed for decades, maintaining a focus on national unity, economic development, and democratic reforms. Today, it remains a key political force in Taiwan, competing with other parties for influence over national policies.
