Myeloablative Therapy

Myeloablative therapy is a medical treatment typically used before procedures like stem cell transplants. It involves the use of high doses of chemotherapy or radiation to destroy bone marrow—where blood cells are produced. This is done to eliminate cancer cells or to prepare the body to accept new, healthy stem cells. While effective, it significantly reduces the body’s ability to produce blood cells temporarily, which can lead to serious side effects, such as increased risk of infection and bleeding. After the therapy, patients typically receive stem cell infusions to help restore blood cell production.
