Marsh Arabs

The Marsh Arabs, also known as the Ma'dan, are an indigenous group residing in the marshlands of southern Iraq, particularly around the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Traditionally, they have relied on aquaculture, fishing, and herding, living in unique reed houses. Their culture is rich in traditions, including music, poetry, and crafts, closely tied to their wetland environment. The marshes have significantly declined due to upstream damming and political conflicts, impacting their livelihoods. Today, efforts are underway to restore the marshes and support the preservation of their distinctive culture and way of life.
