LEEP (loop electrosurgical excision procedure)
LEEP, or Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure, is a medical treatment mainly used to remove abnormal tissue from the cervix, the lower part of the uterus, often due to precancerous changes detected during Pap smears. In LEEP, a thin wire loop, heated by electric current, is used to cut out the abnormal area. This procedure is typically done in a doctor’s office and can help prevent cervical cancer by addressing issues early. It is generally quick, with minimal discomfort, and patients can usually resume normal activities shortly after the procedure.
