Innate immune system

The innate immune system is our body's first line of defense against pathogens like bacteria and viruses. It includes physical barriers such as skin and mucous membranes, along with immune cells that respond quickly to infections. These cells can recognize common features of pathogens and act immediately to contain and eliminate them. This response is generally non-specific, meaning it treats all invaders alike, rather than tailoring responses to individual threats. While it acts quickly, the innate immune system does not provide lasting immunity, which is the role of the adaptive immune system that develops over time.
