Complement System
The complement system is a part of the immune system that helps the body fight infections and clear out damaged cells. It consists of a series of proteins found in blood and body fluids. When these proteins are activated, they work together to mark pathogens (like bacteria) for destruction, attract immune cells to the site of infection, and create holes in the membranes of harmful cells, leading to their death. Essentially, the complement system enhances the ability of antibodies and immune cells to eliminate invaders, playing a critical role in the body’s defense mechanisms.
