Hasmoneans
The Hasmoneans were a dynasty of Jewish rulers who governed Judea from about 140 to 37 BCE. They emerged after the Maccabean Revolt, a successful uprising against the Seleucid Empire, which had imposed Hellenistic culture and practices on the Jewish people. The Hasmonean kings expanded their territory, restored Jewish religious practices, and were significant in establishing Jewish independence. However, their rule grew increasingly authoritarian, leading to internal strife and conflict. The dynasty ended when the Roman general Pompey captured Jerusalem, bringing Roman influence into the region and marking a crucial shift in Jewish history.
