Fort Wagner
Fort Wagner was a Confederate fortification located on Morris Island, South Carolina, during the American Civil War. Its strategic position aimed to protect Charleston Harbor. In July 1863, the fort became the site of a significant battle where the Union's 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the first African American units, led a courageous but ultimately costly assault. The fort's defense was strong, resulting in heavy Union casualties. The battle highlighted the bravery of Black soldiers and played a crucial role in changing public perceptions about African Americans in the military and their fight for freedom and equality.
