African American Civil War regiments

African American Civil War regiments were military units composed primarily of Black soldiers who served in the Union Army during the American Civil War (1861-1865). After the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, thousands of free and formerly enslaved African Americans joined the fight against the Confederacy. These regiments, such as the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, played crucial roles in various battles, demonstrating bravery and commitment to the Union cause. Their service not only contributed to the war effort but also helped challenge racial stereotypes and advance the fight for civil rights, leading to greater recognition of Black soldiers in American history.
