
Robert Gould Shaw
Robert Gould Shaw was an American soldier and a Union officer during the American Civil War, best known for leading the first all-Black regiment, the 54th Massachusetts Infantry. Born in 1837 to a prominent abolitionist family, Shaw passionately believed in the fight against slavery. He led his troops with bravery, particularly during the assault on Fort Wagner in 1863, where many soldiers were killed. Shaw’s leadership and sacrifice highlighted the courage and capability of Black soldiers in the war, and he became a symbol of their fight for freedom and recognition. He was killed in battle but remains a historical figure of significance.
