FMR1 Gene

The FMR1 gene provides instructions for producing a protein called FMRP, which is important for brain development and function. This gene is located on the X chromosome and is linked to a condition known as Fragile X syndrome, the most common inherited cause of intellectual disabilities. In some individuals, a repeating sequence of DNA in the FMR1 gene increases beyond a certain limit, leading to reduced or absent FMRP production. This disruption affects communication between nerve cells in the brain, resulting in developmental challenges and behavioral issues for those affected.
