Colonial India

Colonial India refers to the period when India was under British rule, roughly from the mid-18th century until 1947. Initially controlled by the British East India Company, the British government took direct control after the Revolt of 1857. This era saw significant changes, including the introduction of railways, education, and legal systems, but also exploitation and cultural imposition. It sparked movements for independence, led by figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. Eventually, India gained independence in 1947, resulting in the partition that created Pakistan. The colonial legacy still influences modern India today.
