Madras Presidency

The Madras Presidency was a large administrative region under British rule in southern India from the 17th to early 20th centuries. It included present-day Tamil Nadu, parts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Odisha. Governed by a British colonial administration, it functioned as a major political, economic, and cultural center, with major cities like Madras (now Chennai). The presidency played a key role in trade, education, and development, and its boundaries and administration evolved over time until India gained independence in 1947.
