Assam Accord

The Assam Accord is an agreement signed in 1985 aimed at resolving disputes regarding illegal immigration in Assam, India. It was reached between the Indian government and leaders of the Assam Movement, which opposed the settlement of migrants from Bangladesh. The Accord stipulates that all Indian citizens who settled in Assam before January 1, 1966, would be recognized as residents, while those who arrived after that date would be identified and deported. The agreement also promised various measures for the development and protection of Assamese culture, language, and identity.
