Army of Northern Virginia
The Army of Northern Virginia was the primary military force of the Confederate States during the American Civil War, active from 1861 to 1865. Commanded mainly by General Robert E. Lee, it fought in several significant battles, including those at Gettysburg and Antietam. Renowned for its strong leadership and tactical skill, the army often faced larger Union forces yet achieved many notable victories. Its eventual surrender at Appomattox Court House in 1865 marked a turning point in the war, leading to the Confederacy's defeat and the end of the Civil War.
