Lee’s Retreat

Lee’s Retreat refers to the withdrawal of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army after their defeat at the Battle of Appomattox Court House during the American Civil War in April 1865. Facing overwhelming Union forces and dwindling supplies, Lee attempted to escape to North Carolina to regroup. However, he was pursued by Union General Ulysses S. Grant, leading to further confrontations. Ultimately, this retreat culminated in Lee's surrender on April 9, 1865, effectively marking the end of the Civil War and paving the way for the reunification of the United States.
