Anterior Talofibular Ligament (ATFL)

The Anterior Talofibular Ligament (ATFL) is a band of tissue located on the outer side of the ankle. It connects the fibula (the smaller bone of the lower leg) to the talus (a bone in the foot). The ATFL helps stabilize the ankle, particularly during activities that involve ankle movement, such as walking, running, or jumping. It is commonly injured in ankle sprains, especially when the foot rolls inward, leading to pain and swelling. Proper care and rehabilitation are important for recovery and to prevent future injuries.
