Lateral Ligament Complex
The lateral ligament complex is a group of strong bands of tissue located on the outer side of the ankle. These ligaments connect the lower end of the leg bones (tibia and fibula) to the foot bones, helping to stabilize the ankle joint. They prevent excessive side-to-side movement, especially when twisting or unevenly landing during activities. The main ligaments in this complex include the anterior talofibular, calcaneofibular, and posterior talofibular ligaments. Injuries like sprains often involve these ligaments, leading to ankle instability or pain.
