Alcator C-Mod was a fusion research experiment located at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) that aimed to study how to harness nuclear fusion—the same process that powers the sun. Using strong magnetic fields, it contained a superheated plasma of hydrogen isotopes, mimicking the conditions necessary for fusion to occur. This research is crucial for developing sustainable and virtually limitless energy sources, offering a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels. Alcator C-Mod operated from 1993 until 2016 and contributed valuable insights into plasma physics and fusion technology.
