Age-Related Eye Disease Study
The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) was a significant research project that aimed to understand the effects of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts on vision in older adults. Conducted by the National Eye Institute, it examined how certain vitamins and minerals could influence the progression of these eye diseases. The study found that a specific combination of antioxidants and zinc could reduce the risk of severe vision loss in people with early to intermediate stages of AMD. This research has guided dietary recommendations for maintaining eye health as we age.
