Adrenocorticotropic Hormone
Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. Its main role is to stimulate the adrenal glands, which are located on top of the kidneys, to produce cortisol, a vital hormone that helps regulate metabolism, immune response, and stress. When you face stress, ACTH levels increase, prompting the adrenal glands to release more cortisol. This helps your body manage stress and maintain balance. Abnormal levels of ACTH can indicate health issues, such as adrenal insufficiency or certain tumors.
