Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland, a small gland at the base of the brain. Its main role is to signal the adrenal glands, which sit on top of the kidneys, to produce and release cortisol. Cortisol helps the body respond to stress, regulate blood sugar, control inflammation, and maintain blood pressure. When the body experiences stress or needs more energy, ACTH levels increase to boost cortisol production. Conversely, when cortisol levels are sufficient, they signal back to reduce ACTH production, maintaining a balanced hormonal system.
