Toussaint L'Ouverture
Toussaint L'Ouverture was a key leader in the Haitian Revolution, which took place from 1791 to 1804. Born into slavery in what is now Haiti, he rose to prominence by organizing enslaved people to fight for their freedom against French colonial rule. L'Ouverture was a skilled military strategist and diplomat, advocating for equality and independence. His efforts led to Haiti becoming the first independent nation in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the first post-colonial black-led state in the world. He is celebrated as a symbol of resistance against oppression and the quest for human rights.
