Saint-Domingue
Saint-Domingue was a French colony on the island of Hispaniola, known for its highly profitable sugar plantations run primarily by enslaved Africans. It was one of the wealthiest colonies in the Caribbean due to its intense plantation economy. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, enslaved people led a successful revolution, leading to independence in 1804 and the creation of Haiti. This event was the first successful slave uprising that resulted in the founding of a free black republic, profoundly impacting global history and ideas about freedom and human rights.
