
Jean-Jacques Dessalines
Jean-Jacques Dessalines was a leader in Haiti's struggle for independence from France. Born into slavery, he became a key figure in the Haitian Revolution, motivating enslaved Africans to fight for their freedom. After the successful rebellion, he declared Haiti the first post-colonial black-led nation in 1804 and served as its first ruler. Dessalines is remembered for his strong leadership, dedication to eliminating slavery, and efforts to establish Haiti’s sovereignty.
