Thyroid Cancer
Thyroid cancer occurs when cells in the thyroid gland, located in the front of the neck, grow uncontrollably. The thyroid produces hormones that regulate metabolism, heart rate, and energy. There are different types of thyroid cancer, some more aggressive than others. Symptoms can include a lump in the neck, changes in voice, or difficulty swallowing. Risk factors include exposure to radiation and a family history of thyroid issues. Treatment typically involves surgery to remove the cancer, and sometimes radioactive iodine therapy or hormone replacement. Early detection usually leads to a better prognosis.
