Theories of attachment

Attachment theory explains the emotional bonds that develop between a caregiver and a child, significantly influencing the child's social and emotional development. Developed by John Bowlby and later expanded by Mary Ainsworth, it identifies different attachment styles: secure, anxious, avoidant, and disorganized. Secure attachment fosters healthy relationships, while insecure attachments can lead to difficulties in later relationships. The theory highlights the importance of early interactions, suggesting that a caregiver's responsiveness can shape a child's feelings of safety and trust, ultimately impacting their ability to form connections throughout life.
