The Battle of Culloden
The Battle of Culloden, fought on April 16, 1746, was the last major battle on British soil, near Inverness, Scotland. It pitted the Jacobite forces, led by Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie), against the British government army commanded by the Duke of Cumberland. The battle marked the end of the Jacobite uprising, which aimed to restore the Stuart monarchy. Cumberland’s troops defeated the Jacobites decisively in less than an hour. The aftermath led to harsh reprisals against the Scottish clans and significant cultural and political changes in Scotland, effectively quashing efforts to restore Scottish independence.
