The Jacobite risings

The Jacobite risings were a series of conflicts in Britain during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, aimed at restoring the Catholic King James II and his descendants to the throne after he was overthrown in 1688. Supporters, called Jacobites, believed in the divine right of kings and sought to re-establish James and his heirs as monarchs, opposing the ruling Protestant government. These uprisings included notable battles like the 1715 and 1745 risings, ultimately failing to restore the Stuarts and leading to increased political stability and the final suppression of Jacobite efforts.
