Siege of Khartoum

The Siege of Khartoum occurred from March 1884 to January 1885 during a conflict in Sudan. It involved British and Egyptian forces defending the city of Khartoum against a Sudanese rebel leader, Mahdi Muhammad Ahmad, who sought to expel foreign influence. General Charles Gordon led the defense but was cut off from reinforcements. Despite international interest, the siege lasted almost a year, and Gordon and his troops were ultimately overwhelmed. The fall of Khartoum became a symbol of British imperial struggles, leading to significant political repercussions in Britain and shaping future colonial policies in Sudan and beyond.
