Battle of Khartoum

The Battle of Khartoum took place in 1884-1885 during a conflict in Sudan. It involved British General Charles Gordon, who was sent to defend the city of Khartoum from the forces of the Mahdist revolutionaries led by Muhammad Ahmad, who claimed to be the Mahdi, or savior. The siege lasted nearly a year, with Gordon and his troops trapped. On January 26, 1885, the Mahdi's forces captured Khartoum, resulting in Gordon's death and significant loss of life. The battle highlighted the challenges of British imperialism in Africa and had lasting effects on British-Sudanese relations.
