The Mahdist War

The Mahdist War (1881-1898) was a conflict in Sudan where local Muslim leader Muhammad Ahmad proclaimed himself the Mahdi, a messianic figure. He led a revolt against Egyptian and British rule, uniting Sudanese Muslims under his movement. The Mahdist forces initially succeeded, establishing an independent Islamic state in Sudan. However, the British and Egyptian governments later sought to reassert control, leading to a military campaign. The war ended with the reconquest of Sudan by Anglo-Egyptian forces in 1898, marking a significant struggle over regional independence, religious authority, and colonial influence in northeastern Africa.
