Siege of Alesia

The Siege of Alesia took place in 52 BC during Julius Caesar's Gallic Wars. It involved Caesar's Roman army besieging the Gallic leader Vercingetorix, who had taken refuge in the fortified town of Alesia. The Romans constructed double walls around the town to block escape and prevent reinforcements. Meanwhile, a massive Gallic relief force attempted to rescue Vercingetorix. After intense battles and strategic maneuvers, Caesar's forces successfully held off both the siege and the external attack, leading to Vercingetorix's surrender. This victory solidified Roman control over Gaul and demonstrated Caesar's military prowess.
