Sawm (fasting)

Sawm, or fasting, is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, observed primarily during the month of Ramadan. It involves abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and marital relations from dawn until sunset. The purpose of Sawm is to develop self-discipline, spiritual growth, and empathy for the less fortunate. Fasting encourages Muslims to focus on prayer, reflection, and community, fostering a sense of gratitude and humility. Although exempt for certain individuals, such as the sick or traveling, it remains a significant practice in Islamic culture, promoting both personal discipline and communal solidarity.
