Peshwas
Peshwas were the prime ministers of the Maratha Empire in India, which thrived from the 17th to the 19th centuries. The role began with Balaji Vishwanath in 1714 and became increasingly powerful, often overshadowing the nominal rulers, the Chhatrapatis. The Peshwas managed state affairs, military campaigns, and diplomatic relations. They played a key role in expanding the Maratha influence across India. Notable Peshwas include Baji Rao I and Madhav Rao I. The position declined after the Third Anglo-Maratha War (1818), leading to the end of the Maratha Empire and the British colonization of India.
