Parathyroid adenomas
Parathyroid adenomas are non-cancerous tumors that develop in the parathyroid glands, which are small glands located behind the thyroid in the neck. These glands regulate calcium levels in the body by producing parathyroid hormone (PTH). An adenoma can cause overproduction of PTH, leading to elevated calcium levels in the blood, a condition known as hypercalcemia. Symptoms may include fatigue, weakness, kidney stones, and bone pain. Treatment often involves surgery to remove the adenoma, which can restore normal calcium levels and alleviate symptoms.
