Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma
Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is a type of cancer that originates in the thyroid gland, which is located in the neck and produces hormones that regulate metabolism. MTC develops from specific cells called C cells, which produce a hormone called calcitonin. This cancer can arise sporadically or be part of a genetic syndrome known as multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN). Symptoms may include a lump in the neck, difficulty swallowing, or changes in voice. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial, as MTC can spread to other parts of the body. Treatment often involves surgery, and monitoring of calcitonin levels is important.
