Calcimimetics

Calcimimetics are medications that help regulate calcium levels in the body, particularly in conditions like secondary hyperparathyroidism often seen in chronic kidney disease. They work by activating calcium-sensing receptors on the parathyroid glands, which reduces the production of the hormone parathyroid hormone (PTH). Since PTH influences calcium and phosphate balance, controlling its levels helps maintain proper mineral balance and reduces complications like bone disease. Essentially, calcimimetics help "trick" the body into sensing more calcium, leading to decreased PTH release and improved mineral regulation.
