Nizam-ı Cedid

Nizam-ı Cedid, meaning "New Order," was a reform initiative launched in the early 19th century by Sultan Selim III of the Ottoman Empire. Aimed at modernizing the military and administrative systems, it sought to strengthen the empire against internal strife and external threats. The reforms included the establishment of a new army trained in Western techniques, improvements in taxation, and a push for more efficient governance. While the movement aimed to revitalize the empire, it faced resistance from traditionalists and ultimately led to Selim III’s overthrow in 1807, highlighting the challenges of modernization in a changing world.
