Tanzimat Movement

The Tanzimat Movement was a series of reforms in the Ottoman Empire during the 19th century aimed at modernizing the state and strengthening its institutions. Starting around 1839, the movement focused on legal, administrative, and educational changes to create a more equitable and efficient government. It sought to adopt European ideas, guarantee rights for all citizens regardless of religion, and centralize authority. These reforms aimed to modernize the empire, improve governance, and address internal and external challenges, ultimately laying the groundwork for the empire’s transformation into a more contemporary nation-state.
