Abolishment of the Janissary corps
The Janissary corps was an elite military unit in the Ottoman Empire, established in the 14th century. Over time, they became powerful and politically influential, often resisting reforms and undermining the state. In 1826, Sultan Mahmud II abolished the Janissaries during a conflict known as the "Auspicious Incident." He aimed to modernize the military and reduce their power, leading to a violent confrontation where many Janissaries were killed or imprisoned. This marked a significant shift towards a more modern, professional army and a move away from the feudal power structures that had dominated the empire.
