New Order (Nizam-ı Cedid)

The New Order, or Nizam-ı Cedid, was a reform initiative in the early 19th century Ottoman Empire, introduced by Sultan Selim III. Aimed at modernizing the military and administrative systems, it sought to strengthen the empire in response to internal and external challenges. The reforms included Western-style training for soldiers, improved infrastructure, and updated taxation systems. While it faced considerable resistance from traditionalists, it laid the groundwork for further modernization efforts in the empire, influencing later reform movements like the Tanzimat. Ultimately, it reflected the Ottomans' struggle to adapt to a rapidly changing world.
