Yeniçeri
The Yeniçeri, or Janissaries, were an elite infantry corps of the Ottoman Empire, established in the late 14th century. Originally comprised of Christian boys taken through a system called devşirme, they were converted to Islam and trained as skilled soldiers loyal directly to the Sultan. Known for their discipline and military prowess, the Janissaries played a crucial role in Ottoman expansion and maintaining internal order. Over time, they also became a powerful political force. Their unique blend of military skill, loyalty, and political influence made them a central element of Ottoman power until their disbandment in the 19th century.
