Nigeria Independence

Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960. This marked the end of decades of colonial governance and control. The process was influenced by growing nationalist movements and demands for self-rule, which were inspired by global trends toward decolonization after World War II. Nigeria adopted a parliamentary system of government and became a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. Independence allowed Nigerians to govern themselves, but it also brought challenges, including managing its diverse ethnic groups and political instability, leading to significant events in its subsequent history.
