Neurogenesis

Neurogenesis is the process by which new neurons, or brain cells, are formed in the brain. While most neurons are generated during early development, some regions, like the hippocampus, continue to produce new neurons throughout adulthood. This ongoing process helps with learning, memory, and brain plasticity—how the brain adapts to new experiences. Factors such as exercise, mental stimulation, and a healthy diet can promote neurogenesis, whereas stress and aging may decrease it. Overall, neurogenesis contributes to the brain’s ability to change and recover, supporting cognitive health over a lifetime.
